When it comes to video games, the genres go and come, go up and diminish in popularity, disappear for a while then resurface. Lately, the genre mashup has blurred the discrete lines between the types of game, and although a mechanisms salad is sometimes a revealing treat, it most often creates an unpleasant and confusing disorder. So, listen to the developers, here are three kinds that you neglected, and three that should be set aside in the foreseeable future. Oh, and if you're about to get out of this genre super mashup? Only. No.
I just played an upcoming adventure game, and the combat mechanism was a mini-game at the Simon to match the musical heights in sequence. It was a refreshing and underutilized idea, and it reminded me that we had just not had a great public music games for a long time. Is it time for Guitar Hero to go back? (I understand, it could be difficult to organize a rock band evening for quarantine). I say mainstream because in the space VR, there are many exceptional music games like Beat Saber. But everyone does not want, or can not afford, to attach to an extraterrestrial device just to play music.
Although it is fast approaching, it's been a while since we've seen a (good) full real-time strategy game that was not a reflection mechanism afterwards in another kind, Or itself did not include other superfluous mechanisms such as collecting cards battles. Certainly, the Total War series continues but it really has only one foot in the kind. It is definitely time for good former basic construction action, zerg precipitation and turtle.
Is it a kind? Maybe, maybe not. Psychonauts 2 reminded me that it had been a long time since a developer had not released a game with an authentic mind, humor and intelligence. A humor that was not rude or simply petty, or a self-repository fruit (yeah, I look at you, Rustler), but intelligent and funny at the same time. From all things to do properly in a game, it could be the most difficult because the team must hire a real writer with comic chops and dubbing must be perfect.
For the three kinds we would like to see disappear, read the rest after the break!
